MASTERING THE DAW

As I mentioned previously, I'm not too familiar with working in a digital audio workstation (DAW). Even though 1st Term is almost over and I've gained the basic knowledge of editing, mixing and dynamic effects processing, I understand very clearly that the DAW environment is what my future career will be built upon. Therefore, the sooner I master it, the better the foundations I have as a producer.

The first thing I'd like to do is strengthen the knowledge I already have. There are still 3 other creative mix sessions that I hadn't chosen, not to mention the previous AUD4100 training exercises, of which all material is accessible to me through Google Drive. So while we are still prohibited from accessing the studios truly freely, I can use the time to get better at EQ'ing, side-chaining, parallel compression and automation, all of which still need refinement for me to feel perfectly adapt. There are also wonderful courses on LinkedIn Learning on more advanced techniques in Pro Tools which can provide me with a deeper insight. (LinkedIn, 2019

What I really wish to understand as well is the setup process for recording. Since I wish to be a recording engineer as well (and also work with larger musical sections such as brass and strings), I need to thoroughly understand the I/O, routing settings and initial setup of the DAW, what preparations and steps must I take to get the best possible recording. So during studio training I hope to reinforce all the new knowledge I gain, therefore cutting down setup time and having the chance to work more with the desks themselves and sound processing.

Lastly, in the long run I really wish to become familiar with Logic Pro X as well. Every DAW has its own advantages and shortcomings, so the more tools I have at my disposal and am able to freely employ in the most appropriate circumstance, the easier life will be. Not to mention that Logic is just as widely used (most likely even more so) than Pro Tools and it's the cheaper one-time purchase and offers a whole lot of "bang for the buck". I am positive that getting to know both DAW's like the back of my hand will also definitely pave an easier way for collaborating with different artists and creators that have different work-flow preferences.
